news culture Netflix: Dune, a mainstay of science fiction, will soon disappear from the catalog
It meets on the planet Arrakis. Netflix’s catalog rotates and eventually abandons movies and series not produced by the American giant. Today it’s Dune’s turn (1984) to leave the SVOD service.
Spicy Critical Returns / An SF Institution
A pioneer of contemporary science fiction, just that! Dune, released in 1984, is directed by David Lynch (Mulholland Drive), who you might know from those baffling Playstation 2 commercials. Dune’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name (1965). Despite a critical duality between fans of the film and those of the book, Dune was a colossal success that propelled the universe into the ranks of 7th art cult production.
In the distant future, a resource has become essential for space travel: spice. The concern? This famous spice is only found on the planet Arrakis, also called Dune, due to its arid desert landscape. Duke Leto Atreides is going to live there with his concubine and their son, Paul. It was without counting on Baron Vladimir Harkonnen who set them up from the beginning, an ally of the great Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV. During an attack, Paul and his mother, Jessica, manage to flee and come face to face with the indigenous people of Arrakis: the Fremen. These last ones think that only a chosen one will be able to deliver them.
Despite its more than mixed critical success (41% on Metacritic), The universe of D. Lynch has marked the spirits to the point of becoming an institution in the world of science fiction. In 2021, the franchise underwent a reboot led by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Premier Contact). With Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atréides and Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atréides, the first film will have a sequel in 2023 to cover the entirety of Frank Herbert’s first novel.
