Japanese studios prove month after month, year after year, their expertise and control over animation. After making itself known to the general public with the first three seasons of the Attack on Titan anime, Wit Studio radically changes its universe and approaches Netflix’s SVOD service to develop its new project. After seeing it, a question arises. Is Bubble the most beautiful animated movie of 2022?

Wit Studio Bubble

Bubble (or Baburu by its original title) is a Japanese animated film released on April 28, 2022 on Netflix and on May 13, 2022 in theaters in the Japanese archipelago. This feature film produced by Wit Studio, a structure to which we owe the animated series Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, Great Pretender or even Spy x Family, is directed by Tetsurō Araki (Death Note, Attack on Titan) and scripted, among others, by Gen Urobuchi. (Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass, Godzilla). Hiroyuki Sawano rounds out this creative team as composer. This Japanese musician has worked especially on the soundtracks for Blue Exorcist, Kill la Kill and Mobile Suit Gundam: Unicorn.

In a contemporary world similar to ours, the city of Tokyo is suddenly invaded by mysterious bubbles that end up exploding and destroying the Japanese city. Bubble’s story really begins five years after the cataclysm in a submerged and ruined megalopolis where some young people live in an extreme sport… Battlekour (short for Battle Parkour). Among these athletes, young Hibiki, who suffers from hearing hypersensitivity, performs like a superstar. One day, when he tries for the umpteenth time to climb Tokyo Tower, he almost drowns and is saved in extremis by a strange young woman born from a cluster of bubbles.

The most beautiful animated movie of 2022?

Of course, it is difficult to answer this thorny question for several reasons. The year 2022 has not yet come to an end, and the notion of “beautiful” depends a lot on the perception of each one. Personally, I got carried away, what can I say, impressed by this Tetsurō Araki signed by Bubble. The story, which is a modern reinterpretation of the tale “The Little Mermaid” (Den Lille Havfrue from its original title), is to be expected… especially if you know the work of the Danish author Hans Andersen published in 1837. However, it is difficult not to be overwhelmed for the oneiric and poetic quality that emanates from this visual and auditory experience, in short, sensory, total.

The bubbles become here a supernatural representation, an allegory, the themes addressed, those of living together (“gathering”) and releasing (“scattering”). History can be appreciated for what it is, namely a bittersweet contemporary fable that should delight lovers of Japanese animation, but not only. Bubble stands out above all for its impressive visual section. Wit Studio serves us on a set, Netflix’s SVOD service, a true work of art, a living painting whose brilliant colors sway before our amazed eyes.

The artists behind the early seasons of the Attack on Titan animated series have nothing else to prove when it comes to animation, especially when it comes to action scenes. The explosiveness that emerges from these is only matched by the creativity and mastery displayed by Hibiki and Uta in moving. within urban environments subject to capricious weightlessness. Bubble is not perfect, there is no work as accomplished as it is, but this animated film is generous to the highest degree and provides a whole range of sensations and emotions that are too rare in 2022 to watch. Bubble is beautiful, at least to me.
