For six days, from August 1 to 6, culture is invited to about seven bastides. From Villefranche-de-Rouergue to Vabre-Tizac via Villeneuve d’Aveyron or La bastide l’Evêque, immersed in the lair of festivals in Bastides!
At the initiative of the Espaces Culturels, an association created in 1986, Festival en Bastide is now an unmissable annual cultural event dedicated to street arts.
An itinerant festival, extramural culture
For Rolland Garric, who joined the association in 2000, the first year of the Bastides Festival, all the interest of this event lies in its ability to “irrigate the entire territory with culture”.
Because, “as a farmer, we sow seeds of culture in the different bastides”, adds, not without pride, Francisco Gomes, co-president of Cultural Spaces at the head of the Festival. “Au début, rappelle Rolland Garric, il n’y avait que trois bastides: Villefranche, Najac et Villeneuve. Mais, le festival a grandi, la famille s’est elargie et aujourd’hui, le Festival en bastide se déroule dans 7 lieux different”. Alors, “face à l’actualité parfois morose, au stress quotidien et aux ennuis divers, dit-il, le Festival – et plus largement la culture – offer un temps de détente, d’apprentissage, de découverte et de convivialité tout à fait indispensable”.
A festival on a human scale…
Amiability. “Indeed, this is the term that, in my opinion, best describes the Festival en Bastide”, admits co-president Francisco Gomes. “Little by little, over the years, the event has grown and the public, to our delight, is always there, always more numerous!” Today then, to the street show, other events are added, “let’s think here of the gourmet market in the presence of local artisans!” Francisco enthuses.
“Festival in Bastides, there are not 10,000 people of course, there are between 300 and 600 people, sometimes more, but it is a festival on a human scale where coexistence prevails. We meet, we exchange and it is also what attracts the public”, he adds Rolland Garric.
… and multidisciplinary
If the DNA of the festival remains the same, the event has evolved. “Originally it was just theater. Today is a multidisciplinary festival. There is dance, music or even a circus…” explains Francisco Gomes. For this 22nd edition, “about 30 companies, French and foreign, come together and, of the 38 shows offered, 36 are free”, welcomes the co-president. To carry out a program of this type, “we circulate a lot in the various festivals: Aurillac, Avignon, etc… Today, many companies are, in a way, regulars at the Festival in Bastide”, he adds. And the co-president added “of course, if 36 shows are free, always with the aim of promoting access to culture for as many people as possible, the support of the spectators is essential. I am thinking in particular of the volunteers who are fundamental to the celebration of such a demonstration”. “For this, in fact, about 60 volunteers are mobilized”, specifies Anaïs, intern at the Cultural Spaces.
