An unmissable event dedicated to pop culture, video games and manga, the Geekali fair will be in full swing this weekend at the Nordev exhibition center in Saint-Denis. This fourth edition, whose motto is “from vocation to profession”, will see the appearance of a semi-professional competition for the first time. Highly anticipated by gamers and lovers of pop culture, the fourth edition of the Geekali show has once again marked the month of August. In fact, after a third edition that took place last December due to covid, the flagship event of geek culture will welcome the public this Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Nordev au Chaudron.

As in previous editions, the program will feature numerous activities: parades and cosplay contests, video game contests, K-Pop contests, conferences… With some new features as well: the appearance of a semi-professional esports contest and the launch of a inter-island cosplay tournament
“The Geekali show is changing, this year and for the first time esports players will be paid to play, it is a great novelty and it is a big step forward for the video game sector in Reunion. », proudly declares Kévin Alamélou, president of the Geekali association.
Since 2018, the latter has organized video game contests on the island. His ambition is clear: to professionalize the electronic sports sector in order to integrate Réunion players into the national and world circuits. During the event, around sixty players who qualified before the show will compete solo or in trios during FIFA 22, Rocket League tournaments, and in teams of five during League of Legends and Valorant tournaments. Amateur players will also be entitled to their tournaments. And for lovers of retro games, a space dedicated to old games will delight you.
Players paid to act
As for the guests, the Meeting room gives a privileged place to women, since three guests are essential female figures in the game and cosplay. Kayane (professional player and Versus Fighting Champion), Dina (Just Dance Vice World Champion) and Livanart (French Cosplay Champion) will be present. Another prestigious guest: Stéphan Euthine, manager of the LDLC Olympique Lyonnais professional team. The latter will conduct a conference on the subject of professional games.

The second highlight of the show will be the return of the regional stage of the French Cosplay Cup and the launch of an inter-island tournament (Indian Ocean Cosplay Championship) with participants from the sister island. A free cosplay parade will allow fans to perform in the costume of their choice.
Another of the novelties of the fair and no less important, the section of health and well-being. Training and muscle strengthening workshops will be offered to the public, as well as massages by qualified professionals in reflexology. The prevention of video game addictions will be part of this fourth edition of the geekali that promises to be very rich.
